Energy subsidies in the canton of Geneva in 2026
From 1 February 2026 Geneva applies a new GEnergie subsidy scale backed by CHF 80 million. Solar remains federal (Pronovo), topped up by the premiums of the utility SIG. Here are the verified amounts and the right timing for each application.

The cantonal GEnergie 2026 scale contains no solar measure: the base support remains the federal one-time grant from Pronovo, applied for after commissioning for installations below 100 kWp.
- SIG solar premium2: 25% of the federal grant for new installations from 2 to under 30 kWp, commissioned and certified by Pronovo after 1 January 2026 (15% from 30 to 100 kWp) — a premium from the utility SIG, not a cantonal subsidy.
- SIG battery premium: CHF 130 per kWh, capped at the first 15 kWh, for a battery under 50 kWh coupled to a solar installation — cumulative with the solar premium.

Heat pump: CHF 3'000 base plus power
The GEnergie 2026 scale supports replacing an oil, natural-gas or fixed electric heating system1:
- Air-to-water (M-05): CHF 3'000 + CHF 400 per kW — example for 10 kW: CHF 7'000 by formula. CHF 1'000 bonus for a certified heat meter.
- Geothermal or water-source (M-06): CHF 3'000 + CHF 800 per kW, same meter bonus.
Key conditions: heat-pump system module required below 15 kW, subsidised power capped at 50 W/m², building outside the structuring district-heating zones (or with a derogation), subsidy limited to 50% of costs. The application must reach the OCEN at least 14 days before works start.

Global renovation: aid based on the whole heated area
Beyond single measures, the GEnergie 2026 scale supports the global renovation of a building — envelope and building services together. Amounts are calculated per m² of energy reference area (ERA, SRE in French), i.e. the heated floor area1:

Conditions: building permit in force on 1 January 2000 at the latest; an HPE-Réno or THPE-Réno building permit (M-11 to M-13), or a CECB® certificate and CECB® Plus report (M-10), required for the decision; not cumulative with the single measures M-01 to M-09. The general rules still apply: application received by the OCEN at least 14 days before works, subsidy in principle limited to 50% of costs.
Step by step too: an owner who renovates in several stages (measures M-01 to M-09) and finally reaches an HPE or THPE standard can claim the M-15 bonus, which tops up the subsidies already received to the corresponding HPE or THPE amount. It is filed together with the application for the last stage.
Formula example: a 180 m² ERA single-family home renovated to the THPE standard → 180 × CHF 470 = CHF 84'600, within the limit of 50% of the works cost.

IDC: thresholds tighten from 2027
The heat consumption index (IDC) measures a building's energy use for heating and hot water per m². Geneva's energy regulation sets these obligations3:
- IDC from 125 to 222 kWh/m²·yr: energy audit and optimisation measures.
- IDC above 222 kWh/m²·yr: energy renovation mandatory.
- From 2027: mandatory renovation threshold lowered to 180 kWh/m²·yr.
- From 2031: threshold lowered to 153 kWh/m²·yr.
Houses and small buildings (fewer than 5 heat consumers) are also covered: their owners must assess the building's IDC, with a compliance timetable specific to this category.
HPE / THPE: tax and financing
A building renovated to the HPE or THPE standard can be exempted from the supplementary property tax (impôt immobilier complémentaire) for 20 years, with a certificate of conformity from the OCEN, if the building permit application was filed after 5 August 2010. The certificate has been subject to a fee since 1 September 2026 (CHF 200 online)4.
On top of subsidies, the canton provides a state loan guarantee and, when bank financing is not available, a cantonal loan (10 years maximum). The regulation adopted in July 2026 adds increased subsidies when the owner's financial capacity is insufficient — useful in particular for condominiums (PPE). Assessed case by case5.

Municipal subsidies
Several municipalities in the canton — including Genève, Carouge, Lancy, Meyrin — grant additional energy or renovation aid. Amounts, deadlines and budgets vary: get written confirmation from the municipality before counting this aid in your financing. We check your municipality before the quote.

Does Geneva subsidise solar panels directly?
No — the 2026 cantonal scale contains no solar measure. The base support is the federal Pronovo one-time grant, plus the solar premium of the utility SIG: 25% of the grant for installations below 30 kWp.
Should the application be filed before or after the works?
For the GEnergie scale, the application must be received by the OCEN at least 14 days before works start; works must then be completed within 24 months. For solar, the Pronovo application is filed after commissioning.
Is a storage battery subsidised in Geneva?
Not by the canton. SIG however pays a battery premium of CHF 130 per kWh, capped at the first 15 kWh, for a battery under 50 kWh coupled to a solar installation — cumulative with the SIG solar premium. See our storage solutions.
Is a heat pump in a new build subsidised?
No. Measures M-05 and M-06 only apply to replacing an existing oil, natural-gas or fixed electric heating system. Replacing an old heat pump with a new one is not subsidised either.
Is there a cap on Geneva subsidies?
Yes: the subsidy in principle does not exceed 50% of the works cost, with a minimum of CHF 1'000 per project. Grants are awarded within the annual budget (CHF 80 million in 2026), first come, first served.
What is the IDC and what changes in 2027 in Geneva?
The IDC (heat consumption index) measures a building's energy use for heating and hot water per m². Between 125 and 222 kWh/m²·yr, Geneva's regulation requires an energy audit and optimisation measures; above 222 kWh/m²·yr, an energy renovation. This mandatory-renovation threshold drops to 180 kWh/m²·yr from 2027, then to 153 kWh/m²·yr from 2031.
How much does an HPE or THPE global renovation bring in Geneva?
For a single-family home, the GEnergie 2026 scale pays CHF 390 per m² of heated area (ERA) for the HPE renovation standard and CHF 470/m² for the THPE renovation standard; for an apartment building, CHF 210 and 270/m². The subsidy remains in principle limited to 50% of the works cost. A step-by-step renovation can also qualify through the M-15 bonus. Under conditions, the OCEN's HPE/THPE certificate also opens a 20-year exemption from the supplementary property tax.
My building dates from after 2000: am I entitled to subsidies?
Insulation aid (M-01) and global-renovation aid (M-10 to M-13) are reserved for buildings whose building permit came into force before 2000. Replacing an oil, gas or fixed electric heating system with a heat pump, and solar support (Pronovo, SIG premiums), are not subject to this date condition; other conditions apply (for a heat pump, notably: building outside the structuring district-heating zones, unless a derogation is granted).
Can I renovate in stages without losing the global-renovation subsidy?
Yes. If works carried out in stages (insulation, windows, heating…) finally reach an HPE or THPE standard, the M-15 bonus tops up the subsidies already received to the corresponding HPE or THPE amount. It is claimed with the last stage.
Who issues the CECB® and the HPE/THPE certificate?
The CECB® certificate and the CECB® Plus report are drawn up by a certified CECB® expert. The HPE/THPE certificate is issued by the OCEN (CHF 200 online, CHF 300 on paper, since 1 September 2026); under conditions — notably a building permit application filed after 5 August 2010 — it opens a 20-year exemption from the supplementary property tax.
