Producing without storing means giving your energy away to the grid operator

Without a battery, your panels produce mostly during the day — when you're at work. The surplus is fed into the grid at your distributor's buyback rate, which in French-speaking Switzerland falls within an indicative range of CHF 0.05 to CHF 0.12 per kWh depending on the distributor. In the evening, you buy back that same electricity at your domestic rate, usually several times higher. This gap loses much of the value of your installation.

A battery reverses this equation. The energy produced during the day is stored for the evening, at your own rate. Self-consumption typically rises from 30-40 % to 60-80 %. Added benefit : security during a grid outage.

We only install Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries. It's the safest chemistry on the market — no thermal runaway, 6 000 cycles or more depending on the model. No cobalt, no controversial supply chain.

What capacity for your home ?

Quick guideline : for an annual consumption of 3 000 to 4 500 kWh (apartment or small house), 5 kWh is enough. An average single-family home (4 500 to 7 500 kWh/year) works well with 10 kWh. With a heat pump, swimming pool or electric vehicle (7 500 to 12 000 kWh/year), you move up to 15 kWh. Beyond that, you scale up as needed.

Precise sizing depends on your exact consumption profile — roof orientation, peak hours, daytime presence, and whether or not you have a heat pump or an electric vehicle. Our assessment fine-tunes the recommended capacity and quantifies the applicable subsidies.

Battery subsidies in French-speaking Switzerland

Let's be clear about the real situation : residential storage batteries are not subsidised in most cantons of French-speaking Switzerland. Neuchâtel is the exception : it's the only canton in French-speaking Switzerland to offer direct cantonal support for batteries through its cantonal renewable energy support fund. In the other cantons, support comes through the overall photovoltaic project : the federal Pronovo One-Time Remuneration applies to the PV installation (not to the battery as such). We tell you the truth before signing, with no promise of subsidies that don't exist.

What our clients ask us

What is the real lifespan of an LFP battery?

Modern LFP batteries withstand 6,000 to 10,000 cycles before reaching 80% of their initial capacity. With one cycle per day (typical for a Swiss household), this corresponds to 15-20 years of use. Enphase guarantees 15 years on the IQ Battery 5P.

LFP or NMC — what is the difference?

LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate): the safest chemistry, no thermal runaway, 6,000+ cycles, no cobalt. NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt): higher energy density (useful in electric vehicles, not in a fixed home battery), but a known thermal risk and only 3,000-4,000 cycles. For a stationary residential battery, LFP is objectively superior.

Does it work during a power outage?

Yes, in “Backup” mode. Your battery continues to power your essential circuits (lighting, refrigerator, internet router) for several hours to several days depending on its capacity. The Enphase IQ 5P handles this automatically, with no manual intervention.

How much does an installed battery cost?

For a quality LFP system installed in Switzerland, the investment depends on the capacity (5, 10, 15 kWh or more), the brand, and the complexity of connecting it to your existing installation. Enphase is generally positioned in the premium range, while Sigenergy offers a modular, scalable approach. Our study prices your specific project before signing.

Can I add it to an existing solar installation?

Yes. If your current inverter is “AC-coupled” (conventional), the Enphase IQ 5P or the Sigenergy can be added easily. If your inverter is old or “DC-coupled”, it may need to be replaced. We audit your existing installation and propose the most efficient solution.

What maintenance is required?

Practically none. Modern LFP batteries have no moving parts (especially the Enphase, with 100% passive cooling). The mobile app alerts you in case of an anomaly. An annual check is recommended for commercial installations.

What happens after 15 years?

After 15 years, an LFP battery still retains a significant share of its capacity — it keeps working, just with a little less margin. You can keep it, replace it, or add a new module in parallel (the Sigenergy case). LFP components are recyclable.

Is the battery subsidised?

Honest answer: in most French-speaking cantons, the battery is not directly subsidised. The federal Pronovo one-off remuneration applies to the photovoltaic installation (not to the battery as such). Neuchâtel is the only French-speaking canton to offer dedicated cantonal support for residential batteries through its cantonal fund for renewable energy. A few municipalities may occasionally offer a bonus — we check your municipality before the quote.

Where should the battery be installed?

The Sigenergy SigenStor is IP66-rated — indoor or outdoor installation is possible. The Enphase IQ 5P is typically installed in a garage, utility room or cellar. Our teams check the ventilation, temperature and access during the study.
